  • Genasi - 4th Edition D&D

    4e D&D, Play, Players

The genasi in 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons have been completely overhauled.  Whereas in 3rd edition the genasi were all different races depending on the element they were descended from, in 4th edition the genasi are all planetouched from the “elemental chaos.”

This means that they all get the same base ability bonuses.  But you get to choose from one of five elemental manifestations to start with.

    Earthsoul
    Firesoul
    Stormsoul
    Watersoul
    Windsoul

Each manifestation has a different power associated with it and as you progress in levels you can take feats to get access to more manifestations or to boost your elemental powers.

Personally I like the windsoul manifestation the best.  The ability to fly is hard to come by, and being able to fly as an encounter power gives a lot of flexibility.  Because of the mechanical change of putting them all as one race, the flavor of the genasi has shifted a little bit from their original roots, but I can understand why WOTC would want to make this move.  It does make the game a bit simpler.  I would favor having each genasi being their own race myself, but as a DM I do like this implementation.

    Which genasi do you like?

I like the water genasi myself. Its shiftwave ability is a lot like the eladrin’s feystep, but with cooler fluff, and it can be bumped up to a 7 speed with Paragon feats.

I have a LFR genasi who has the extra manifestation feat: windsoul and firesoul. Wind and fire tend to get along very well. Sometimes wind will snuff out a fire, but other times it helps it grow. I definitely see their abilities being mutually beneficial.

So…do i need to be in the particular manifestation to use its gift? i mena, is kinda obvios to be in water soul to shift that way, but is not that incredible to use firepulse being in Strom osul or viceversa…or what about the other extras you win? like the +5 to resis x stuff liek fire and cold and that…if somebody can tell me i would be grateful :D

Currently, I’m working with a Watersoul. In the campaign my brother is running, he suggested it throughout all the current manifestations. (PS The game is today~ Horray, a chance to try her out~) Reply~;; Oliver, you do need to have the manifestation to use it’s gift. It’d be kind of hard to explain how you’re able to be resistant to fire and cold when you’re a Watersoul (Unless you have a double manifestation going on, but one wouldn’t have that too early in the game). Personally, I’d just take a neckslot item that has resistance to any element that you choose. It’s Cloak of elemental evolutions. 25 and 30, it’s handy because in combat, you can, at-will, change it’s element before an enemy hits you. It changes back at the end of your next turn, but at least you stave off getting hurt for one more round.

i have a lvl 14 Windsoul/watersoul/earthsoul Genasi Psion. Its turned out to be very fun and overpowered. with moves like earthshock then daze effects i can lock down opponents indefinatley. also being able to move 36 squars in 6 secs if i ever need to is really fun.
