  • What is the Perfect DnD Snack Food?

    Fluff/Inspiration

    The after Thanksgiving rush is upon us here in the United States, and this brings me to a very important topic - Food.

    Selecting the perfect snack food for your Dungeons and Dragons session can be a daunting task.  After all there are so many excellent choices from seeds and chips to cakes and cookies, not to mention all the home-made goodness hiding at unknown gaming tables throughout the universe.

    Over the years we’ve tried many different snacks.  Some – like the pickled cauliflower weren’t so popular.  Others like the year old stale Ding Dongs also didn’t get a return vote.  Nuts with shells on them of any kind are always nice, but then we found ourselves scrambling to find containers to hold the empties.

    I love Cheetos, but my notes keep turning orange.  Salt and vinegar chips are excellent though after a while they wear on the tongue – and really aren’t a favorite for everyone.  Oreos are good, but only great if you dunk them in milk and I’m not a fan of open topped containers the gaming table.

    So where does this leave us?  What is the perfect snack?  Something good by itself that doesn’t leave a mess that everyone at the table loves?

    Donuts?
    Beef Jerky?
    Pepperoni sticks?
    Whole roasted cashews?
    Gummi worms?

    Somehow I don’t think I’ll be able to decide just now.  In the meantime I think I’ll go back to testing out the possibilities.

      Our favorite is Pocky, a Japanese snack (basically chocolate-covered pretzel sticks). The end has no chocolate, so you can hold that end while you eat the rest. So your fingers stay chocolate-free.

      Usually we eat hot chocolate during cold seasons.. we stop for 5-6 minutes and drink it.. so without too many movements on the table, we don’t spill it everywhere..

      or usually a girl of my party brings a cake.. ok.. there are pieces of cakes quite everywhere.. but we clean at the end of the game and it’s not a really big issue :P

      I haven’t found the perfect snack either, but I do have some goals:

      * Cheap
      * No Residue (i.e. no greasey, sticky, or stained fingers)
      * Available in various flavors
      * Easy to clean up

      Recently I have been using trail mixes and pretzels at the table, I get burned out on these snacks fairly quick. If beef jerky were cheaper, I think it would be a contender. My wife likes to cook, so she’ll also make meatballs which totally doesn’t meet my goals but have become a favorite of the group.

      Here’s a healthy and VERY tasty one for ya:

      Red bell peppers cut into strips and served with hummus.

      Unless your players don’t have a sweet tooth (!), they’ll love these.

      Popcorn is one of our favorites. Out of the bag is pretty good and clean since the kernels just stay in the bag. Can get kind of greasy if you buy the buttered type.

      Also, Chips Ahoy are a staple, though sometimes they don’t get eaten and sometimes they’re gone in 10 minutes.

      We used to do the more “traditional”, but getting old and cholesterol takes its toll. :)
