Introducing the Dungeons and Dragons Online Character Database

Advice/Tools, Product Reviews

So this is for all those of you out there not interested in paying the Wizards of the Coast Use tax in order to use their character builder/managment software.

MWMDragon over at www.dungeonsdragons.selfip.com has created a new database specifically for storing your 4th edition character information, which of course can be useful for a variety of different applications.  Personally (if I weren’t paying the WOTC tax) I would use it because I keep all of my data electronically and it would be a convenient way of storing said data w/o worrying if my hard drive is going to crash.

MWMDragon said that “It is meant to aid in online pnp gaming, by making a safe storage place for everyone’s character sheets during and after play.”  If that sounds like something useful to you then go ahead and check out the online character database.

Please note that it isn’t the most glamorous looking piece of software ever invented.  There is a help button but it just brings up a shot of the character sheet instructions from the PHB.  Of course since all you are doing is filling in data from your character sheet I don’t see that anyone smart enough to read the PHB and the internet will need any help using the database.

That’s awesome that there is information on all of the characters. Definitely a good reassurance on any computer issues. Thanks for the post.

I wouldn’t store my characters here, since they’ll probably be sued in the near future. They use D&D art without permission, as well as link to portions of the PHB pdf.
    Use thetangleweb or mythweavers.

I’m amazed that you think of it as a tax - why should Wizards make a character builder that’s updated every month with material for free? It’s a fantastic piece of software, and it’s saving me money in buying books.

Plus, I’m getting excellent quality material from Dungeon and Dragon every month, including, now, exclusive content.

Really not seeing where you’re coming from on this one.

Yeh, I don’t see why you call it a tax. It’s your choice whether to subscribe or not.

I and most of my players use the WotC Character Builder quite happily. If we didn’t, I can see how a database like this would be quite useful, if for nothing else than the DM being able to view character sheets between sessions. However, the requirement to use IE7 is a deal-breaker for me.

I’m with Mathew & Greyulf on this one, the DDI is not a tax. I pay $70/year for 80% of my D&D content, plus I get Dragon, Dungeon and the character builder. Toss in the newly annouced exclusive content and it’s a great deal.
